Our student blogger MELISSA RADBAND reports back on taking part in the WYQS celebration event for LGBT History Month in Leeds.

This weekend I helped out at my first LGBT community event, during LGBT history month at Leeds City Museum. West Yorkshire Queer Stories organised a museum takeover which involved stalls from community LGBTIQ+ groups, craft activities, film screenings, and talks. It was great to see all the people behind local organisations and support groups who do so much work for the LGBTIQ+ community.

I helped out on the badge making stall, where people could create their own LGBTIQ+ themed badges, whilst learning about the project. I didn’t quite know what to expect but I was surprised to see so many families with young children getting involved.

My research led me to learn about the Huddersfield Gay Group (HuGG), which has been running for almost twenty years. I contacted a member of the group called David to arrange an interview. He told me he’s been in Huddersfield since the 50s, so I’m excited to hear all about his experiences, and in particular the Gemini Club and the national pride in 1981.
